THE THROUGH-LINE
I spent my career inside the organizations I now advise.
In 2015, I cofounded College Beyond and led it as founding executive director. We started the way most early organizations do, with conviction and relationships and a willingness to do whatever the mission asked, and we raised our first million dollars. That was my first lesson in how much an organization can ride on one person.
From there I moved through the senior seats of the sector: managing director at Good Reason Houston, chief of programs at Youth Force NOLA, and chief program officer at StriveTogether, a national organization whose work has reached more than 14 million young people. I have sat in the founder's chair, the executive's chair, and the board seat.
Across all of it, I watched the same pattern hold good organizations back: the founder becomes the operating system, and the organization cannot grow past her. That pattern is the reason Free to Lead exists.
